Undergraduate Admissions
Definition of an International Student
If you are in any non-immigrant status, not a US citizen, do not have approved US permanent residence, refugee status or political asylum, you are classified as an international applicant when you apply to KU. If your application for US permanent residence is pending and not yet approved, you must apply to KU as an international student. Where you have attended high school does not determine which office you should apply through or which application you should use. Your in-state or out-of-state residency status is not determined by the office you apply through. Eligibility for in-state tuition is determined by the KU Residency Specialist in the Registrar's Office after admission.
Which application form should you use?
- Undergraduate applicants in non-immigrant status, including applicants whose permanent residence status is pending approval, apply through the Office of International Undergraduate Admissions.
- Undergraduate applicants who are U.S. citizens, dual citizens (who are eligible for U.S. passport), approved U.S. permanent residents, refugees and U.S. political asylees apply through the Office of Admissions and Scholarships.
If you are uncertain about your status, you may present your papers to the ISSS Advising Office for determination of status or contact isss@ku.edu (785) 864-3617.
