F-1 | I-20/Program Extension
The ending date in item #5 of your I-20 Form is the date by which you are expected to complete your current program.
Eligibility
- Continually maintained status
- Have a compelling* academic, medical or other reason(s) for not completing the educational program by the completion date (#5) on the I-20
*A "compelling reason" may include such things as a change of major or research topic, unexpected research problems, or a documented illness, which has interfered with full-time study. Academic suspension and probation are not considered acceptable reasons for an I-20 extension.
When to Apply
Extensions must be processed before the completion date (item #5) on your current I-20. We recommend that you submit your extension request within the semester that your I-20 expires.
How to Apply
Please make an appointment or come in during walk-in to meet with an ISSS advisor. Submit a completed:
- F-1 Program Extension Request Form
Note: Proof of finances for an extension is only needed if there has been a change in the source of funding.
