J-1 | Change of Program or Degree Level

Change of Program or Major

This process is usually initiated by the student. Once the request has been processed by the appropriate school (i.e. School of Engineering or CLAS) or department and recorded in Enroll & Pay, ISSS will automatically create a new DS-2019. Student will receive an email when the new DS-2019 is ready to be picked up in ISSS office, Room 2 Strong Hall. If a new DS-2019 is not received within 2 weeks of initiating the change of major, please contact ISSS.

Change of Degree Level

Student must gain admission into the new academic program. Note: J-1s can only progress to a higher degree (PhD to Masters is not possible). Appropriate proof of finances for the entire program must also be submitted along with the application for the new degree before a new DS-2019 for change in education level is issued. ISSS strongly recommends that this process be completed early so a new DS-2019 can be issued prior to the beginning of the appropriate semester.

Note:

It is important that you keep all SEVIS DS-2019s issued to you. You should keep these documents in a safe place. If any of these documents are damaged, lost, or stolen, it is your responsibility to have them replaced as quickly as possible.
