Bringing Money to the United States
Before you leave your country, you should plan for your finances.
You can purchase traveler’s checks in U.S. Dollars from the bank in your country and take them with you to Lawrence. Be sure to keep them safe and write down the check numbers, in case they get lost.
After you arrive to the U.S., you should set up a local bank account. You can then have your money electronically wired to from your home account to your new account. You should arrange to have enough money to cover at least your first month’s expenses AND your first semester of tuition, books, insurance, and housing.
DO NOT underestimate the amount of money needed. DO NOT carry a large amount of cash with you. It is very difficult to exchange money from your currency to United States dollars while in the U.S. and, even if it is possible, there may be a large fee. Bring your money to the United States in U.S. dollar traveler’s checks, have it electronically wired to your new U.S. bank account, or get a bank card from your home bank to withdraw cash from your account through an automatic teller machine (ATM). ATMs are very common in Lawrence and are even located throughout campus. Please note that this method will most likely not be sufficient for large payments, such as your tuition, due to additional fee charges and daily withdrawal limits.
KU does not accept Visa credit cards. If you plan to pay your tuition with a credit card (see below), you should make plans to sign-up for a MasterCard, Discover card, or American Express card.
Paying Your Tuition
The deadline to pay your tuition and fees will depend on when you enroll. KU posts e-bills on the 21st of each month and payments are due on the 15th of the following month. Failure to pay by the deadline will result in assessment of additional fees.
Payment Options
- Online by e-check
- Online by credit card (MasterCard, Discover, or American Express). Credit card payments are charged with an additional 2.25%.of the total bill. KU does not accept Visa.
- By mail with a check from a U.S. bank (write KUID# on check).
- In person by check (include KUID#), money order or cash. Bring your e-bill coupon from Enroll & Pay with you.
KU has a payment installment plan administered by Tuition Management Systems (TMS). The payment plan allows students to pay their tuition, required campus fees, University housing charges, meal plan, and optional campus fees over various months depending on the semester. Scholarship/Grant/Fellowship Recipients
Unless you are from a treaty country or will have a job in the U.S., please be aware, that you will have to mail 1) your original passport or 2) a copy of your passport certified by the issuing agency to the U.S. government (IRS) in order to receive the scholarship, grant or fellowship. You are encouraged to get the certified copy from the agency issuing the passport before arriving to the U.S. Notarized copies will not work.
